Erectile dysfunction: the fables

FABLE 1: Erection pills keep you hard for hours, whether you like it or not. In fact, a lot of what the Internet has to say about pills is rubbish. And this story simply isn’t true: even with a pill, you always need some kind of arousal or stimulation to actually get an erection.1

FABLE 2: Because you only fail occasionally, you don’t have a problem. In reality, any trouble having an erection, or getting one hard enough for penetration, could be a symptom of something more serious.2,3

FABLE 3: Erectile dysfunction is an old man’s problem. Although the chances do increase with age, actually the problem can strike anyone, young or old.4 But however old you are, there are plenty of treatments that can help.

FABLE 4: Buying erection pills online is as safe as getting them from your GP. In fact, more than 50 per cent of pills bought on the internet are fakes. At best useless, at worst downright dangerous.5

Erectile dysfunction: the facts

FACT 1: Men with erectile dysfunction often have trouble discussing the issue, even with their GP.6 But if you are suffering problems, we strongly advise you to consult a medical professional.

FACT 2: Dividing pills may seem a good way to save money, but it’s not a sensible idea. Dr Simon Gaisford warns that taking only part of a pill can seriously reduce its effectiveness.7 And in some cases it can be harmful to your health.

FACT 3: Medication for erectile dysfunction is sometimes available on the NHS, but not always.8 Many patients therefore need to pay for private prescriptions.

FACT 4: Smoking isn’t only bad for your lungs, it’s bad for your erections too. That’s because of the damage it does to your blood vessels. A regular smoker could well start suffering from erectile dysfunction by the age of 35.9
